Show Criminal code The supporters and originators of the new criminal code were not conversant vith American History. They would have known that one of the prime causes of the Revolution was Britains use of the Writ of Assistance or 'Blanket Search Warrant." But our new criminal code gives our police the privilege to use and I quote "Blanket Search Warrants." The arresting officer of-ficer does not nave to draw up a bill of particulars for what he wants to search for. He can obtain a warrant of arrest by merely calling the magistrate up on the phone. When our forefathers would riot ratify the Constitution until these rights of the arrested were protected or an agreement for their protection was agreed to, we wondgr what kind of ,?Kangaroo Justice" will be perpetrated with our local police force and our presiding magistrates. Already anyone charged with a traffic violation has no recourse but accept the charges and pay his bond. When a magistrate can accept as an expert witness, officers with just a few weeks training in the police schools, when our jury panel seems to only consist of "buddies to the policeman" we wonder what kind of high handed justice will be handed out with the new code. It would seem that at some time the public would become fed up with this high handed justice. Yours truly, WENDELL K. NASH |
