Show Manila Clara kobinson Phone 784-3463 i Town of Manila Council names new chairperson Mrs. Harvard (Dolores) Redden took the oath of office as new councilperson for the Town of Manila at the regular meeting of the Manila Town Council on July 12. She will replace Rusty Muir who was appointed in April. Muir never did serve on the Council. At the time he accepted the position as Town Councilman, Coun-cilman, he had made application to the U.S. Forest Service for employment and took the Town position on the condition his application to the forest service was not accepted. It was and the Town Council has been short a councilperson until Mrs. Redden accepted ac-cepted the position. Bids were let for the new Town well at a special meeting held July 18 at 6 p.m. The bid was let to James Drilling Company of Denver, Colorado with alternate costs. If the well produces over 400 gallons per minute a new pump will have to be installed which will make the cost higher. The driller is to be in Manila to start the well on July 30. It should take about five days to complete the drilling. The M&L Homemaker's Club held the annual club picnic at Navajo Cliffs July 19. This is sometimes called the children's picnic as it is the only time during the year children are invited to attend club. This was a special picnic as the club presented a gift to retiring Sweetwater Demonstration agent Alma Schelt. They and other special friends of Miss Schelt had donated money to purchase the gift. As this proved a busy time of the year not many of the members were in attendance. In attendance at-tendance were nine members, 10 children and 4 adult guests including1 Miss Schelt, WaNeta Lamb, Dominque Ferrero, and Kevin Campbell. The "It" gift packages were won by Ora Iver-son, Iver-son, Miss Schelt, Peggy Briggs, and Edie Pallesen. A picnic dinner was enjoyed including hot dogs for the children. The steak fry to which the members' husbands will be invited will be held August 16. Don't forget the Daggett County Community Booth for the Sweetwater County Fair. The M&L Homemaker's Club is sponsoring the booth this year. They are requesting that everyone in the county bring cleaned produce to the senior citizen center in Manila between noon and 6 p.m. on August 6. This will include vegetables, fruits, forage seed, threshed grain seed, sheaf forage for hay, sheaf forage seed for seed. Members of the M&L Homemaker's Club will help with tagging and making out entry blanks, but the produce must be clean. Forage should be gathered and dried before entering. Some of the club members have helped with this work before. Mary Ruble, who has done this when the booth was sponsored by the Lion's Club and again for the M&L Club, will not be able to do it this year. The Club is looking forward to good participation. The highest temperature in Manila this past week was 92 degrees above zero on July 17. The past few days it has been cooler and on Sunday, July 22 only reached 78 degrees. After meter reading time Sunday .02 of an inch of moisture fell. This is the first measurable moisture for this month. Several times a few drops have fallen. Attending the livestock judging and fitting demoastrations at the Sweetwater Sweet-water County Fair Grounds in Rock Springs, Wyoming last Thursday evening from Manila were Mr. and Mrs. Billie C. Ralphs and their children, Glenn Ellsworth, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Schofield and their children, and Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson. Saturday forenoon Duane Lamb sheared the Lucerne Valley lambs for the 4-H members who will be entering them in the Sweetwater County Fair August 8. Saturday at 4 p.m. Livestock 4-H members and leaders with some parents went to McKinnon to attend a joint McKinnoh-Manila livestock fitting and showing meeting. Mrs. Tom Maloy and children are spending two weeks in California with Mrs. Maloy's mother. Mike Miller, Mrs. Maloy's brother accompanied them. Tuesday will be a Manila LDS Ward pot luck picnic. This will be combined with the Primary Olympics. Huston Robinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson of Manila, and 10 Boy Scouts, the scouts fathers, and several leaders from Las Vegas, Nevada arrived in Manila Monday afternoon. They drove to Brownie Lake where they camped overnight. On Tuesday using, horses borrowed from local residents as pack animals, they back-packed back-packed to Teepee Lake where they enjoyed fishing and horseback riding until Friday when they returned to Brownie's Lake. They returned home by the way of Vernal. Dr. Jim Van Alooten of Salt Lake will be giving treatments at the senior citizen center. Mrs. Norman Long accompanied by her mother. Mrs. Vonda Batty, and her brother, Nile Bigelow of Vernal attended at-tended the funeral service of Mrs. Long's uncle Golden Merkley of Ogden, Utah July 20. Mr. Merkley was buried in Tridell, Utah where he had been a former resident. Mrs. Vonda Batty of Vernal spent four days last week visiting with her daughter and son-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Long. Sne also spent some time visiting with her two granddaughters, grand-daughters, Jana Tinker of Manila, and Sheryl Collett of Dutch John. Visiting with Mrs. Cherril Woodard, Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson, and other relatives in the Manila area are Mr. and Mrs. Riley Robinson and sons, Richard, Sean, and Michael of Placentia. CA. |
