Show Cancer Society plans annual crusade confab .,h Division of the American 16 cocietv will hold its annual :etinn-cru'sade conference at 'i Z September 27th and 28th, l vear in ' addition to special rrkshops for the Unit Of-,,ngfr Of-,,ngfr m around the state, the ce will offer subjects daily interesting to residents of. ! unn Lyon, of the University of Utah Medical Center, will lead a panel discussion on the Southern Utah Fallout Problem. Dr. Lyon has been studying the records of cancer in towns like St. George and has determined that the number of cancer, eases is higher than expected, probably as a result of atomic bomb testing in the I9.r()'s. This subject can be of interest to Uintah Basin residents also, since fallout also reached the pastures of the Uinta Mountains. "Herbal Medicine Among Mormons" will be the subject of a presentation by Dr. N. Lee Smith. The interest in "natural" treatments and cures for diseases is very high in this state. He will certainly consider the pros and cons of such treatments. Cancer research going on today and the results of a Utah teen-age smoking survey are also on the schedule. Those of us who live in Utah feel that smoking is not a serious a problem here as it is elsewhere. It will be interesting to hear the results of fhis recent studv The fall meeting serves as an inspiration in-spiration and training for volunteers as well as a time for them to get away from daily life and concentrate on Cancer Society interests. Each Unit in the state is expected to send its. President, Secretary and the Chairmen of Public Education, Public In- formation, service and Fund-raising. Last year, five volunteers from the Iflntah Unit attended a similar meeting at Snowbird. At that time the award for Outstanding Unit for the year was presented to the Uintah Unit. This year, Marie Godfrey is retiring as President and is currently enlisting new volunteers volun-teers to serve local residents. "The meeting at Snowbird is a great way to start the year. It's really worth a year of work to be treated to the fall colors and relaxing atmosphere. I hope anyone interested in further details will call me at 789-3886.
