Show In the game called softball the slugger has to gain a triple or a homer, but in the case of Levi Smuin of Ashley Ward the Davis 1st team did most of the work for his triple. Smuin hit what appeared to be a fly for an out and it seemed that the only running the Ashley runner would encounter en-counter would be from home plate to first base. However, that wasn't the way it was to be. Ashley's Smuin popped a lazy fly ball into shallow left field. Davis 1st players were really eager to capture the ball for an out. The third baseman, shortstop and second baseman backed up toward the ball and a number of outfielders rushed toward the ball. The ball slipped through the glove filled sky and bounced on the ground for a base hit. A number of the Davis 1st players fell on their behinds. Ashley's coach near third base started waving like a wild man. The coach said, "Go to second base. There's nobody there. Go on to third base.'.' The third baseman was in the outfield. The only two infielders left on the diamond were the first baseman and the pitcher. One of the players fired the ball to John Luthi, the pitcher, as Levi Smuin was runnmg by him toward third base. Luthi had the ball in his mitt, but didn't have anyone to throw the ball to . at third base. Smuin won the race to third base, but the next batter struck out to end the inning and all the excitement ex-citement over a pop fly. Davis 1st center fielder, Lee Slaugh, was shouting to Ivan Gardner, "I've got it." However, Slaugh didn't have it as Gardner bumped into him and nabbed the ball. Slaugh didn't have it because Gardner got it. Ross Construction's battle With Conoco was a wild affair. It was the first game this season in the Vernal Women's Softball League to go eight innings. A guy in the stands turned around and looked like he was saying, ."Don't you know this is a softball game." Some fans didn't like the umpire and Jeff Weeks, the man behind the plate, decided that he had enough as he took off his mask and pulled out his plate duster and said to the fan, "If you can do any better th,en you ump." The fan was really eager to ump as he quickly put the mask on and was ready to call the balls and strikes. However, soft-ballers soft-ballers decided they wanted to keep Weeks as the umpire and he reclaimed his equipment. There were some unusual defensive plays.
