Show Residents mother celebrates 90th birthday in July Alice Southam Cook, 90 was honored on her birthday by her family July 15 at an open house at the home of a son Bernard Cook in Cedar Fort. She is still very active and traveled to Vernal for the Southam family reunion held July 21 at the Naples Ward Chapel. She is visiting at the home of a daughter, Edris Karren for a few days prior to returning to her Cedar Fort home. Mrs. Cook was born July 20, 1889 to George Henry and Jane Hacking Southam. She adopted Cedar Fort as her home at a young age following the death of her mother. She made her home with an aunt and grandparents and attended schools in the Cedar Fort area. She also spent a short time at the Brigham Young Academy. Being gifted in public speaking and . poetic writings, she has been much in demand to aid in community and church affairs in that capacity. She is an active member of the LDS Church. She started teaching religious classes at the age of 13 and sang with the "Singing Mothers" chorus for 12 years and has- done a great deal of genealogical work. Mrs. Cook who is the oldest in a family of 13 has four brothers and two sisters still living. They are Ralph, Clair, Niles and Grant Southam all of Vernal; Lizzie Collier, Charleston, Utah and Merle Wilkins of Vernal. Twelve of her own children are still living including Sheldon B., Mrs. Ralph (Mabel) Smith, Mrs. Ralph (Reba) Kitchen, of American Fork; Thayrel V., and Mrs. Bert (Edris) Karren, Vernal; Marion S., Kaysville; Mrs. Richard (Arvilla) Taylor and Donald S. both of Salt Lake City ; Rulon W., Lehi; f ' i - t ALICE COOK celebrates 90th year. Mrs. Cecil (Florence) Henke, Heber; Bernard, and Mrs. Cloyd (Maxine) Harris both of Cedar Fort. She has 69 grandchildren; 159 greatgrandchildren great-grandchildren and three great-greatgrandchildren. |
