Show STRIKE OF EXPRESS ' MESSENGERS OFF NEW YORK, April 15. Announcement Announce-ment is made today that as a result of the five days' conference, the threatened threat-ened strike of 35,000 employees of the express companies operating in the Metropolitan Met-ropolitan district has been avoided. The employees have gained an increase of wages, a reduction in their hours of work in most cases from twelve to ten, and the recognition of their union. Prior to April 6 the heads of the companies com-panies had refused to accede to any of i the demands of the men. and the latter ! made preparations to strike on May 1. A conference was arranged and the settlement set-tlement was reached. The strike was to be a far-reaching movement, and express employees all over the country were affiliated with tlmse in and about New York. The companies which participated in the conference were the United States, American, Adams, Southern, Wells Fargo, Far-go, Knickerbocker. National, Pacific, Long Island, New York and Boston Dispatch.
