Show We, the Vomen , What Price Parenthood In War Days? By RTTH MnXETT Right this minute there must be thousands of parents wondering "Why did we ever have a son?" To bring a child into the world, to work hard to educate him and give him every advantage possible possi-ble ("We want him to have an easier time than w had"), for 30 years to worry about his health, his happiness, his chances in life, and then when he is ready to tart making use of all that has been done for him to have him called to war. It isn't Just a son those parents are losing. They are losing 20 or 25 years of their lives. They are facing the bitter thought that It might have been better never to have had a son. They are realizing that all their worrying, all their work, all their sacrifices are now a pitiful Joke. While they were worrying over a son's health, they might have known it wouldn't matter. The healthiest are taken first. The fittest fit-test are the first to face the guns. And If they are feeling like that those parents of 40 and SO how are young couples who as yet have no families feeling? Aren't the thinking ones dedd- ing, JNO, we aon i want u wuiij and work and sacrifice for 20 years that we may have a son who some day will surely be Just one of an army's millions"? Aren't governments going to have an Increasingly hard time selling men and women on the glories of family life? Certainly husbands and wives have a right to doubt that they are "doing their duty to humanity" human-ity" to bring children Into a world that gees to war when the people of all countries are praying for peace? |
