Within the last few months there have been many cases tried where the policemen police-men have acted as Interpreters for prisoners who spoe French, German, Italian, Chinese and Spanish. A new language was sprung on Judge Diehl in the police court Thursday afternoon, but the court was not feazed. Frank Potter was the prisoner. He was accused of vagrancy. Patrolman Taylor had arrested him and when he was arraigned it was found that the J prisoner was deaf and dumb, and that he could neither read nor write. The court was In a peculiar predicament. predica-ment. It was certainly impossible to send to Logan for an interpreter. The classic brow of the Judge wrinkled until un-til it looked like the corrugated roof of a deserted shaft house, but Patrolman Taylor was equal to the emergency. "If it please your Honor." he said, "I think I can talk to the man." "Try It," said the court, as he heaved a sigh of relief. "It certainly will please the court lf you can make him understand." Then for a moment Taylor's fingers few as though he were the original Herrman, reincarnated. "The man understands," said Taylor. "Tell him that if he will get out of town he will not have to go to JaiL" Again Taylor's fingers danced a minuet min-uet In the air. The face of the deaf mute, who had been weeping copiously, brightened with a smile. Then he placed the palms of both hands together, and with a quick motion his right hand shot out as far as he could reach. "He says," spoke up Taylor, "that he will get out of town as fast as lightning light-ning if he gets the chance." There was a titter of amusement from the front row of spectators and then the fat man In the back row burst out with a guffaw that was Infectious. The court rapped for order and the bailiff pounded on the floor with a club. Finally Fi-nally silence was restored. "Tell the man to get out and never come back." The court was out of humor. hu-mor. Taylor made a few swift passes, as though trying to hypnotize the victim, and the latter quickly grasped the opportunity op-portunity presented to him. He went from the courtroom on a run. |
