Show THIS FROST-PROOF ORANGE IS A LEMON Strange Besult of Four Years' Work by Department of Agriculture Agricul-ture Experts. WASHINGTON. Feb. 27. In an effort to discover an orange Impervious to frost, scientists of the Department of Agriculture labored four years and have produced a lemon. The orange-growers j of Florida complained com-plained to the department that the orange-growing industry was unprofitable, unprofita-ble, because of the destruction of the fruit by frost. "We'll produce an orange that will grow with Icicles hanging- to the trees," declared the experts. They went to work. Plant breeding was begun and hybrids hy-brids obtained which 'would grow almost al-most at the north pole. The scientists worked for four years. Finally they asked for an additional appropriation to continue the work, and the committee afked: "What Is the quality of this frost-resisting, orange you have produced?" "Well, It Is not exactly an oranae," replied the scientists. "It is a lemonf' "Then, It will not take the place of the orange?" was asked. "If we get the money it will," was the answer. "From the hybrid we now have we expect to produce the real orange." The scientists got the money. |
