Show V. M. CLEMENT, FAMOUS MINING EXPERT, IS DEAD Salt Laker Who Was Known Throughout the World Passes Away at Saltillo, Mexico. of California, where he made a brilliant record. He became early Interested In the Coeur d'Alene country, and aided In the development of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan properties, of which he was the manager. He afterward became be-came associated with John Hays Hammond, Ham-mond, and went to South Africa, where he developed the Rand mine and planned the great mills for the reduction reduc-tion of the Rand ore. After leaving South Africa, Mr. Clement Cle-ment returned to America, but arain went to London, where he remained for some time and built up a reputation throughout England as an expert. He was then called upon to go to Siberia and examine the mines. His trip and his reports never brought a special result. re-sult. Returning to America, Mr. Clement became associated with Capt. J. R. De La Mar and was the manager of his properties for six months. For three years Mr. Clement has given his attention to big mining properties prop-erties which he acquired. near Saltillo, Mexico. He had disposed of the greater part of these prior to his death, and was preparing to settle up his Mexican affairs and return to Salt Lake to reside. re-side. He had heavy local interests in mining and Industrial stocks. Mr. Clement was married In California Califor-nia ten years ago, but for several years has lived here, where Mrs. Clement is prominent socially. Mrs. Cleihent was with her husband at the time of his death, as she always accompanied him wherever he was called by his duties. Victor M. Clement, the famous mining min-ing engineer of Salt Lake, died yesterday yester-day morning at Saltillo, Mexico, as the result of a serious abdominal operation which he underwent a few days ago. It is believed that an attack of ap-pedlcitis ap-pedlcitis was the cause of the operation opera-tion though nothing is known upon this point. Mr. Clement had a severe attack of la grippe before he left this city, nearly two months ago, but it was believed that he had fully recovered. Victor M. Clement was .known in all the world for his ability, and his death removes one of the world's greatest authorities au-thorities on mining. His work as mining min-ing expert has taken him to almost every country on the other continents, and he has been identified with many big mining ventures in all parts of the Western hemisphere. His reputation was such that It was said of him that he could raise more money on a mining proposition, on his word alone, than could any other man in the world. He was perhaps better known in England than in some parts of bis own country, and was a close friend of John Hays Hammond and, with him. went through the Jamieson raid in South Africa. Af-rica. Mr. Clement lay in a Transvaal prison under sentence of death for many months, and it was only through the intervention of the English Government Govern-ment and the protests of the United States Department of State that he was not hanged. Clement and John Han Hammond and other foreign mining experts of Johannesburg were Involved in the schemes which resulted In the Jamie-son Jamie-son raid. Clement and Hammond were regarded as ringleaders and dangerous men by the Boers. . Mr. Clement was an American, and was born in California about forty-eight forty-eight years ago.
