Neb., April 27.-The arrival of President Roosevelt's special train in Lincoln this afternoon at a few minute after 12 o'clock was announced by a chorus of factory whistles. At this signal sig-nal all stores in town were closed and remained locked up until after the departure depar-ture of the President and his party. The military escort formed a pageant that has not been equaled in Lincoln since the recruiting of troops for. the Spanish-American Spanish-American war. The 60,000 population of Lincoln was increased in-creased nearly twice that amount by the I Influx of visitors this afternoon. The President spoke from a stand erected in the capitol grounds. . GRAND ISLAND, Neb.; April 27. President Roosevelt made an early start today pn what promises to be a busy week. He broke the gfound on the new Carnegie library and then delivered a short address in front of the high school . at 9:15. He then left for Hastings. Gov. Mickey and Senators Dietrich and Millard Joined the President here.. The Governor will go with him as far as Hastings, and the Senators will be his guest until Omaha is reached. 0UAHA "WILL SPREAD . HEHSELF TONIGHT IN HONOR OP ROOSEVELT. OMAHA, April 27. The President's tour today Includes stops at Hastings, Lincoln and Fremont and a number of smaller towns. . The train will arrive at Omaha at 6- p. m., and elaborate preparations prep-arations have been made for the entertainment enter-tainment of the party. . After a drive through the city a dinner will be served -at the Omaha club, and President Roosevelt will speak to the public at i the Coliseum at 8:3f this evening. "PLANT TREES," SAYS ; ROOSEVELT IN SPEECH AT HASTINGS, NEB. HASTINGS. Neb.. April 27. President Presi-dent Roosevelt reached here at 10:15 this morning. He was greeted by a large crowd, and. made an address from the depot steps. The President spoke of the forestry situation In Nebraska, Faying that as the people of the State were protecting the original scanty forest, for-est, they now had a more and better natural forest than ever before. x6ut the work should not stop, he said. Tbe people should continue the planting: of trees. The Federal bureau of forestry, he said, is co-operating directly with three-planters in different parts of the State. At the conclusion of his speech, the President was taken for a short drive, , in the course of which he made an address ad-dress to the school children from his carriage. , . PRECAUTIONS TAKEN BY RAILROAD PEOPLE TO GUARD PRESIDENT. LINCOLN. Neb., April 27. Extraordinary Extraor-dinary precautions were taken today to Insure the safety of the President during dur-ing his trip from Hastings to Lincoln. |
