Fire which was discovered at 1:25 o'clock this mprnln destroyed the roof of the foal chutes of the Rio Grande Western Railroad company and caused a loss that Is estimated at 2000. , ' Several hundreds of tons of coal burned and four coal cara were also consumed con-sumed - v ' - The Are, which Is believed to have been either Ignited by sparks from a passenger engine, or by a torch left in the coal otiutes by a careless laborer, was discovered by an employee, who turned In an alarm to the company's fire brigade and to the fire department. The company's brigade did excellent work In confining the flames for some time, but they ppread and got beyond control prior to the arrival of the fire department ' . " The coal shed has a passage running through It and on the track In this passage were four cars of coaL These were also fired. A switch engine was attached and the flaming cars were hauled down the track for a block, where a stream was. turned on them and the flames extinguished.. . . Ihe firemen were aided In their efforts to extinguish the fire by the heavy rain, which began to fall about 2 o'clock this morning. For a time the flames threatened to spread to the railroad shops, but by great effort were confined to the coal sheds. The damage, which Is estimated at $2000, was chiefly confined to the south end of the sheds. |
