PREACHER FAILS IN OmCE OF MAYOR. TOLEDO, O., April 27. Two years ago the Rev. George Mather was elected Mayor of the city of Gallen. He at once undertook a great work of reform. He tried to close the saloons and Immoral houses. In this he found his hands tied and failed signally. He then attempted at-tempted other lines of reform, but failed in all. Finally, broken In health and spirit, he announced that he wished to tender his resignation. It was accepted ac-cepted and J. M. Hart was appointed to fill the vacancy thus occasioned. The Rev. Mr. Mather Is now near death's door, his heart broken over his failure, and It Is not thought he wtll live more than a few weeks.
