Show 7Lii "Yctlcv" JocrnalIsa llzzzit. It seems the press .of the country is not yet through debating Dr. Parkhurst's propose4 "ideal" newspaper, although the New- York divine denies that he intends tackling such a fishy proposition. Editor Olasmann of tho Ogden Standard, in his address before the Utah Press association, the other day, took a gentle w hack at the yellow journal jour-nal Parkhurst's bugbear although the able editor of the Standard seemed to have anything but a clear conception of "yellow," as understood in New York. Big headlines hare nothing to do with saffron-hued publications. . The color pertains to the editorial spirit,- which exaggerates, distorts, falsifies, bullies, seduces and inflames. It is the spirit that incited the hand that assassinated that noble man, the late President McKinley, It is the spirit that aids and abets anarchism. Dr. Park-hurst Park-hurst does not object to large headlines, but his "ideal" newspaper would be free from all sensationalism, sensation-alism, including the scare heads of a great railroad wreck. In one word the gentleman says his paper "would represent the conscience of the American people, and fearlessly express it." The Seattle Star well says: "There are hundreds of newspapers newspa-pers in this country that are trying to do just what rarkhurst pleads for, and making fine progress, too. They print the news; they do things; they edueate; they fight for the good and true; they strive for better living; they point a moral at every opportunity; they reflect the will of the public, and do represent the conscience of the American people. Sensationalism! The men who howl most about it couldn't tell you what they mean by the word. The unexpected is sensational. The crucifixion, was sensational. There Isn't a big happening related re-lated in the Bible that was not sensational Th word means no more than 'grand' or 'astonishing,' yet it is hurled at American newspapers today much as youonld cry leper at an unclean human being. The American afternoon paper is, in the newspaper field,. an intensified edition of Dr. Park-hurst Park-hurst in the pulpit. Both are sensational, if you will, because they are out of the rut, striving for a better order of things, and keeping humanity stirred up to the necessity of progress." The antiquated an-tiquated citizen who eqjs The Telegram is "yellow" is merely a trifle behind in the real meaning of the new use of an old word. |
