Sir Ch&rlei Elvers-Wilson, president of. the Grand Trunk railway, -will sail for- England today. He said the proposed extension of the Grand Trunk lines through the Dominion ' tt" Canada "to the 'Pacific coast to cost 175,000,000,; la sow . practically practi-cally assured of success. The enabling MIL which will be the charter of the new road, has passed through all the committees of the Canadian Parliament Parlia-ment and Is about to be advanced to the third reading tn the House of Commons Com-mons at Ottawa. 1 Capital of $75,000,000. ' This charter provides for. the organisation organi-sation of a separate company, to be known as the Grand Trunk Pacific railway, rail-way, with a capital of 175.000.000. Under Un-der this charter there will be built a line 3860 miles lone, extending from Quebec to Port Simpson, on the Pacific ocean, with several branches. While It was originally Intended to use the existing lines of the Grand Trunk between Quebec and North Bay, It has now been decided to build an alr-llne between these two points. From North Bay west the line will be practically prac-tically as heretofore mapped out passing pass-ing through the cities of Winnipeg" and Edmonton, and with branches to Port Arthur, Regina and Calgary. TSaj Build to Dawson. The possibility la also being considered consid-ered of building a branch from Port Simpson to Dawson City, but under the charter, as now asked (or, no provision has been made for this extension. It is believed that It will take over five years to complete the entire project pro-ject It Is asserted that the new route will i provide the ahortest line between London Lon-don and the far East and that It will also shorten the distance between many United States points and far East as Port Simpson is about ISO miles nearer the ports of China, Vladlvostock and Manila than Vancouver or Seattle, and i about 650 miles nearer than San Francisco, Fran-cisco, while it is no further away than these ports from Hawaii. Australia and other Important South Sea porta. From Liverpool the distance to Yokohama will be 310 miles less than by the nearest near-est existing line, and 1212 miles less than via New York and Vancouver. It will even be shorter than by the trans-Siberian trans-Siberian route. |
