Show AUTOISTS HURT AS ROAD GAVES , Two Smithfield Women in j Serious Condition From 1 ! . j Accident. George Romney, Jr., I recently appointed census enumerator for the northern part of Utah, Mrs. George j Romney, jr., Mrs. J. K. Calllster and Edward Ed-ward Sloan, o years old, grandson of the Romneys, all of Smithfield, Utah, were injured at 11 o'clock today, when the automobile au-tomobile in which they 'were riding fell into a cave on the detour road through tile Clearfield district. As a result of the accident all the : adults are at the Dee hospital in serious condition. The boy escaped injurs', but is remaining with his grandparents at the hospital until relati es arrive. Wounds Are Serious. Mr. Komney's injuries consist of a compound com-pound fracture of the riglu elbow, head bruised and cut and right ear torn; Mrs. ' Romney's injuries are internal, possinly l serious, and Mrs. Oil lister has a severe wound at the base of the scalp, j Reports from Clearfield said the Romney Rom-ney party was on the way home after a visit in Salt Lake. They were passing 1 over the detour, which has been the tem-I tem-I porary state road the last three months. Road Is Undermined. At one point sand and material had been taken from beside the road, but the fence had not been changed to move the road back, and It is stated that the undermining of the road had followed to such an extent tha t when the weight of t lie automobile passed over it the embankment em-bankment caved in. The car fell twenty-five feet, during which time it turned over two or three times. Several automobiles passing along the road narrowly escaped plunging Into the hole. The drivers went to the aid of the injured. Tonight the condition of Mrs. Romney and Mrs. Callister is serious. |
