Show '. Portland Girl Is Winner of Cross of War (Chicago Tribune Special berviee.) NGW YORK, Aug. 17. One of the few American women who gained the French Croix de Guerre for bravery and heroism under fire in France was Miss Oril Elsie Hen-thorne, Hen-thorne, of Portland, Ore., who returned re-turned yesterday when the transport Patricia docked in Hoboken. She and her sister, Agnes, were civilian aides with the Y. M. C. A. in the canteen service in France. Detailed with the Second division, they remained with the outfit for twenty months. For five days, in the front lines, Miss Henthorne was under shell fire, hut did not allow exploding German shells to interfere with her work of serving soldiers with hot drinks. The Henthorne sisters slept in what was formerly a German dugout, and brewed their hot drinks there to take to tho soldiers sol-diers in the tranches. |
