Show BLOW TO CARRANZA. The collapse of the Bertrand government govern-ment in Honduras is likely to have a far-reaching influence upon the relations rela-tions between the United States and Central America, and is almost certain to prove a blow to the prestige in Latin-America of tho Carianza government govern-ment in Mexico. Tho overthrow of Bertrand is expected to put an end to tho efforts of his faction in Honduras and the Salvadoreans to unite the two countries, a plan which Carranza has encouraged in his avowed purpose to build up a stri ng pan-Latin league to support his anti-American altitude. President Carranza has cherished the ambition of winning the support of the Central and South American nations in his stand against the Monroe doctrine, a movement at which he strongly hinted in his recent message to the Mexican congress, iu which ho savagely attacked tho doctrine as threatening the integrity integ-rity of tho two Americas. The Carranza Car-ranza plan also had for its object the doing away with the necessity for commercial com-mercial and other relations with the United Slates. In this pretentious scheme the Mexican president had a willing and somewhat able aide in Bertrand. Carranza managed to keep Mexico In an unfriendly attitude towards the United States during the world war, and Salvador and Honduras showed marked pro-German sympathies during tho whole of that struggle, thanks to tho activities of Bertrand and his lieutenants. lieu-tenants. If Carranza and his confederates confed-erates had succeeded in their designs, the purpose undoubtedly was to establish estab-lish stron ir trade relations with Germany. Ger-many. The coilapso of the Bertrand regime up."cts this program, at least so far as Honduras is concerned. |
