LOXI'OX, Sept. 13. v-By the Associated Asso-ciated Press. ) British naturalists, who have been confidently expecting that the only live okapi in captivity was to be brought to the .ooloudcal gardens in Regents' park, were disappointed today w hen the news came from Antwerp that the animal had been brought there from the Lon'o by l'r. Lebrum. It was the cift of .Mine. Landahem. whose husband hus-band is in the t'ono medical service. The okapi is the survivor of a distant dis-tant ancestor of the giraffe. An adult stands about five feet hih, and although al-though it has the general shape of the giraffe, its neck is relatively shorter short-er aud its forelegs are not so uiU in proportion to the hindquarters. The sides of the niima! 's head are licht fawn color, and the general col-oration col-oration of the body is a dark purple. The most striking characteristic is that the rump and the upper part of the les are transversely striped with black and white. It was first known in UK', having hav-ing been found in the Semliki iorest. haunting low undergrowth and swamps. This particular specimen was in .Mine. Landmjhcm 's possession for a number of years, and photographs of it received here show it eating out of her hand. |
