Show GARFIELD BUCH NlF RED CROSS BUSY J Chairman of Supplies Submits Sub-mits Highly Creditable Report for March, NO GAUZE SHORTAGE Erroneous Report, Calculated Calcu-lated to Retard Work, ' Has Been Spread. On rli eld branch of the Suit Luke county chapter, American Ked Cross, yesterday submitted, through Mrs. K. E. Nelson, chairman of supplies, a report of the work done in the month of March. The ' she win? made is highly creditable, especially es-pecially when the comparatively small ' sizc-tf the branch is taken into conskler- 1 Mrs. Nelson said that about 150 women did the sewing and knitting and r about 100 were engaged in making surgical sur-gical dressing- Her report records work as follows: Seventy-two suits of pajamas, pa-jamas, 2G bed shirts, 49 comfort pillows, , 2!) sweaters, 57 pairs of socks, 45 towels, -It; triangle bandages. 2S abdominal ban-daces, ban-daces, 5 four-tailed bandages, 4N T ban-daces, ban-daces, 80 three-yard rolls, 5S irrigation pads, 6 absorbent pads, 3C96 surgical dressings. Goodly Sum Raised. i This is by no means all that the Gar field branch accomplished in March, for by means of a minstrel show, given last j Thursday a sum in excess of $300 was raised for the Red Cross, and the branch also contributed a bis? motor truck load of clothing and shoes for the Belgian and French refugees. The bureau of instruction announced ; yesterday that a class in dietetics, under Mrs. C. P. Crooks, would be held at Rowland Row-land Hall Friday afternoon at 2:20 o'clock; also, that the evening class would meet Saturday at 7:30 o'clock. Two more Salt Lake women. Miss ' Zella Smart and Mrs. Anna L. Young, left this morning to attend the second i Home Service institute of the Red Cross, which opens in Denver today. Miss Alma Dundas, another Salt Laker, preceded , them by a day. "Wherever there is a family which includes a soldier, there will be found a place for home service in some form," is one of the slogans of the institute, which aims to provide a thorough cou.'se for those workers who , are directly concerned in maintaining the morale of the American soldier by proper service to his family. The appeal of the Red Cross for the recruiting of 5000 more nurses for service in the army nurse corps of the United States is still -being urged by national, division and chapter officials everywhere. Miss Damaris A. Beeman, secretary Utah i state committee, Red Cross nursing ser- ;. vice, at the city hoard of health, will furnish fur-nish nil required information upon ap-plicn. ap-plicn. iiauze in Plenty Here. Probably another German propaganda J canard, but in any event capable of do-V do-V Wng much harm if . taken seriously, is a ' ;jort that lias been industriously clrcu-,r clrcu-,r lr among chapter members to the effect ef-fect that the supply of gauze is nearly exhausted and that the central and other &u7.e rooms are about to be closed. There Is not even a shadow of truth in the report: re-port: there is an abundance of gauze on hand, and, instead of closing any of the gauze rooms, new ones are being established estab-lished in the county at the rate of several sev-eral each week. There is material for all who desire to work on surgical dressings dress-ings and no member will be denied the opportunity to participate in the essen-' essen-' tial work for the wounded soldiers of America and the allies. In spite of the snowstorm that raged most of yesterday, the central gauze room was more nearly crowded than it was on the day before" and there was manifest among the workers a spirit of earnestness and zeal that makes It apparent the imperative im-perative need of more surgioal dressings Is being clearly realized each day. Those in charge of this great department of Red Cross work are entirely confident that the Salt Lake county chapter will continue to set the pace for surgical dressings in Utah and will from week to week and month to month break the output out-put record. |
