Show NtW CUM IT CEWTERJS OPENED Interesting Programme Inaugurates In-augurates Regent Street Heaquarters. Enthusiasm prevailed at the opening of the new community center on Regent street yesterday, in spite of the unfavorable unfa-vorable weather, a large number of visitors called to inspect the building and to enjoy the wheatless cookies made under the direction of Miss Jean Cox, recently of the Utah Agricultural college at Logan, who will have charge of the community kitchen. The building, with immaculate exterior and Interior, is an ideal setting for an example ex-ample in good housekeeping. The first floor is fitted up for a reception room and kitchen, and the rooms on the second floor are to be used for club rooms. An address was made during the morning morn-ing by Mayor YY'. Mont Ferry, who expressed ex-pressed approval of the community center cen-ter plan and promised that a municipal market would be established for the summer, sum-mer, probably on Regent street. In front of the center. Mrs. C. IT. McMahon, who originated the community center idea, also spoke, telling of the objects and hopes of the board of directors. Addresse swere made hy Dr, E. G. Peterson of Logan, presi-. dent of the Utah Agricultural college, W. W. Armstrong, state food administrator, adminis-trator, and Miss Alice Ravenhlll of Logan, Lo-gan, a domestic expert. Afternoon speakers included Br. John A. "U'ldtsoe, president of the University of Utah, and Dean William H. Leary of the university. Dr. Ernest A. Smith of the Salt Lake schools was the evening speaker. Music was furnished during the receiving receiv-ing hours by a trio composed of Charles Shepherd, Miss Romania Hyde and Miss Hunter; Professor A. C. Lund, who sang, accompanied by Professor J. J. McClel-lan; McClel-lan; the High School Glee club, under the direction of Miss Lisle Bradford, and composed of James Mann. Wallace Cas-tleton, Cas-tleton, Milton Dorius and Glen Anderson; and the ladies' chorus, under the direction direc-tion of Mrs. Lizzie Thomas Edward. Hostesses selected from the board of directors for the different hours were as follows: From 10 a. m. to 12 m. Mrs. Ernest Bamberger, Mrs. C. H. McMahon, Mrs. Janette Hyde, Mrs. George M. Bacon, Mrs. W. Mont Ferry and Mrs. N. W. Clavton. From 12 m. to 2 p. m. Mrs. Edgar M. Ledyard, Mrs. Charles M. Hecker, Miss Alice Rowe, Mrs. W. F. Adams and Mrs. Andrew J. Gorham. From 2 p. m. to 4 p. m. Mrs. A. H. S. Bird, Mrs. Clesson S. Kinney, Mrs. George Davy, Mrs. John D. Hagman and Mrs. John Mallck. From 4 p. m. to 6 p. m. Mrs. W. M. Stewart, Mrs. William Reid, Mrs. C. H. Wells and Mrs. W. N. Williams. From 6 p. m. to 3 p. m. Mrs. Simon Bamberger, Mrs. Gould B. Blakely, Miss Mary A. Perry and Mrs. Harold W. Pickering. Pick-ering. Classes In domestic science, including instruction in food conservation, preparation prepara-tion and relative values of different foods, will be taught every morning at the center cen-ter by Miss Jean Cox or someone under her direction. The classes will be free to all women who care to take advantage of them. The house will be rented for social functions and rooms may be reserved as meeting places, for clubs. Several social functions are already being planned to be given there. Other phases of the work and the uses to which the center mayN be put will be introduced as the plan develops. |
