MINES LARGELY IDLE Makes Suggestions to Dr. Garfield for Relief of the Western Situation. There is no good excuse for any coal shortage In Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and possibly California, if ample and regular car supply is quickly made available at the Utah coal mines to enable the producers pro-ducers to -work their men six days a week, according to A. H. Cowie, vice president and general manager of the Utah Fuel company. Mr. Cowie, who is now in New York, visited Washington last week and reported re-ported the coal and car situation in Utah to Dr. H. A. Garfield, national coal administrator, ad-ministrator, and as a result 1300 cars have been ordered west for the use of the Denver & Rio Grande railway coal purposes. This information was contained con-tained in a telegram from Senator W. H. King at Washington to Mr. Cowie at New York, who in turn notified A. D. Pierson of the Utah Fael company last night. Mines Largely Idle. According to information received in Salt Lake last night. Senator King personally per-sonally interested himself in the car situation sit-uation in Utah. Mr. Cowie, tn his report to Dr. Garfield, Gar-field, said thnt the Utah coal production In 1918 was 3,621,935 Ehort tons and that The production for the year of 1917, with ample and regular car supply, should have reached upward of 5,000,000 short tons. Mr.' Cowie said that the Utah mines are now idle from two to three days each week for want of empty cars in which to ship coal to Idaho, Washington, Washing-ton, Oregon, Nevada and California. Mr. Cowie complained that the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and Oregon Short Line were delivering practically no empty cars to the Denver & Rio Grande railroad. Offers Suggestions. Mr. Cowlo offpred the following suggestion sugges-tion to Dr. Garfield as a means of relieving re-lieving the threatened coal shortage in Utah: Tha t the government place an absolute embargo on all empty cars, both open and closed, box or stock, moving west of Ogdcn or Salt Lake City via either the Western Pacific, Oregon Short Line or Southern Pacific, Pa-cific, and cause all such westbound empties to be detoured into the coal mines of Carbon county, Utah, for immediate through loading with coal for Idaho, Washington, Montana, Oregon, Ore-gon, Nevada and California, where there Is bound to be intenso suffering suffer-ing for want of cnal within the next thirty or sixty days unless a decidedly de-cidedly increased number of cars are at once made available at the Utah coal mines. Tonnage Is Available. "It is generally understood, or so claimed at least, that the coal production in many localities is short on account, of the lack of labor." Mr. Cowie said, "but this is not so in the Utah coal mines." The Utah coal mines can immediately, daily for bIx days weekly, load with coal at least 100 open or closed, or both, more empty earn tha n they are now receiving, receiv-ing, according to Mr. Cowie. This additional addi-tional coal tonnage is Immediately available avail-able for adjoining states if the cars are forthcoming, he says. |
