The finals, instead of beinir played today, have been postponed to Saturday. Thornton Gilmer defeated F. S. Murphy in the most strongly contested match of the year. The match went twenty-one holes, both players being tied at the end of the first two rounds. The two golfers tied on both the nineteenth and twentieth twen-tieth holes, and when Murphy drove into a sand trap on the twenty-first hole, Gilmer Gil-mer was able to win the hole and the match. Murphy took a one-hole lead over Gil- I mer in th-j early part of the first round, 1 but Gilmer took advantage of Murphy's : two poor approaches on the ninth hole and set the match even again. The second round was a zi?-za affair, I first one player having the advantage, land then t he other. Aft er Giimer had j won the fifteenth hole. Murphy came back and took the sixteenth. Gilmer acain took the lead when he won the seventeenth seven-teenth hole, and it looker as if he had the matrh cinched when he smt an excellent approach onto the eighteenth green on his third stroke, but Murphy, , after making an exceedingly good drive, sent his ball upon the green on his sec-orid sec-orid shot, and took the hole. After tying both the nineteenth and twentieth holes, Gilmer sent his ball onto the twenty-first green on his drive, while Murphy shot hly into the sand trap. He sent his ball over the green in attempting to get over out of the trap, and the best he could do then was a four on the hole. Gilmer took the match when he sank his put for a three. George Von Elm won from R. C. Van Schaak in the other semi-final match. Von Elm was one up at the end of the first nine holes, and when he won three of the next six holes played he was able to end his match, 4 up and 3. In the Leon Sweet cup handicap fllsrht. J. F. Critehlow won from C. H. Doollttle by default, and A. G. Horn also won his n atch when C. A. Day also defaulted. Critehlow and Horn then played their final match, instead of waiting till the latter part of the week. Horn was winner. win-ner. 3 up and 1. |
