Labor, backed, it is said, by the none too subtle hand of the Teuton, has practically declared de-clared civil -war on the authorities in Harlan county. In the past three weeks more than twenty men have been killed as a result of the mine strike ' troubles and many have been injured. Two have been slain In the last, forty-eight hours. Bands of armed strikers intimidate the non-union men who have braved the wrath of the union men to work in the mines. Many of the men killed are nonunion. non-union. The condition, has become so serious se-rious that County Judge Ward has offered of-fered $r.rt0 reward for the man responsible responsi-ble for the death of Lawrence Scott, the last man killed. Judge Ward led a posse into the mountains In search of the criminal crimi-nal last night. Appeals for troops are futile, inasmuch inas-much as the Kentucky national guard has been called into federal service and is no longer under the supervision of the state authorities. Harlan county officials, offi-cials, however, have purchased rifles and will put them at the disposal of the home guard in an effort to keep down lawlessness. lawless-ness.
