Show LEADING DOG TEAMS REG0RD243 MILES Begin on Last Half of 522-mile 522-mile Race Today; Hart-man Hart-man Shows Pluck. ST. PAUL. Minn.. Jan. 2$. Gunnar Tommason, Mike Kelly and Hyrrtur Hanson, leaders In the Wlnnlpeg-to-St. Paul dog race, drove their teams Into Harwood at 7 p. m., after having traveled 48.2 miles from Reynolds during the day. They will remain there over niRht, taking tak-ing an early, start for Fargo, where thev will cross the Red River of the Xorth into Minnesota for the last leg of the 522-mile race. Fred Hartman, the plucky Boston as-sayer, as-sayer, who has been trailing the field since his lead doe- was killed at St. Arathe. Ara-the. Man., Thursday, stopped for the night at Hillsboro, N. D., where he arrived ar-rived at 7:20 p. m. Hillsboro is thirty miles north of Harwood. Har-wood. Hartman traveled seven hours and ten minutes today, covering 38. 7 miles with three dogs in harness. Hartman f..auled one of his dogs on the sled when his feet became sore today and plodded through the drifted snow far behind his W competitors leading his team. At every town he was met bv- delegations who admired ad-mired his game spirit In remaining in the race under so many disadvantages. Gunnar Tomasson, favorite in the early betting in the Derby, resumed the contest con-test at Hillsboro at 11:40 a. m., after a day's layup at Ardoch, N. D. He denied that he had been relieved by W. F. Hillock, Hil-lock, rural mail carrier, at Oslo, Minn., or any one else, adding that his name had probably been confused with that of one of the lagging teams. Tomasson drove only four dogs out of Hillsboro, leaving his fifth, a pup, at that point. The ouartette he is driving are in good condition, however, and he made his pace for his companions all the way to Har-court. Har-court. Albert and Gilbert Campbell, .Toe Met-calf Met-calf and William Grayson, who left Grand Forks at 7:10 a. m., twenty miles behind the leaders, made good time today, and when they left Gardner. N. D., shortly before dark they declared they would remain re-main on the trail until they reached Fargo, Far-go, twenty-two miles away. The leaders have covered 243 miles of the distance. |
