Show RETAILERS' PROFITS 100 BIG, IS CHARGE Speaker at Housewives' League Meeting Accuses Dealers of Extortion. j The high cost of living1 was the subject of an interesting: talk given by Mrs. F. C. Ralph before a meeting of the Housewives" House-wives" league at the Y. W. C. A. headquarters head-quarters yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Ralph, who is a poultry producer, declared that she has been receiving 30, 35 and 40 cents for esgs which local dealers deal-ers have been selling as special fancy-brand fancy-brand eggs for TO cents, i Mrs. Ralph asserted that it is not the j producer who is profiting by the ad-, vance in prices, but the retail dealers, j She accounted for the high price of pota- ! tatoes by the fact that the farmers have! their potatoes pitted, owing to the meager j prices offered them by the dealers. Steps i are being talien by the Housewives' ; league to induce the farmers to sell some : of these stored potatoes. j Mrs. C M. Heeker read bouse bill No. S7, providing for the regulation of the storage of certain articles of food and for the inspection of cold storage houses. Mrs. Hecker also reported on the nurses' bill and the child labor bill. She said that certain industries, notably the canning companies and the beet raisers, were working children as much as fourteen four-teen hours a day. The bill soon to be considered by the legislature restricts child labor to eight hours. A change in the time of meeting was voted bv the league from the first and third weeks in tile month to the second and fourth. After the meeting was adjourned a demonstration in the making of whole wheat bread was given by Mrs. Pollock. A committee was apponited by Mrs. C. M. Rehbar, president, to work in cooperation co-operation with the economic section of the Ladies' Literary club for the purpose pur-pose of establishing a social center. Members Mem-bers of the Housewives' league are shipping ship-ping in butter, honey and apples by parcel post at from lf to 25 per cent cheaper than tl'.ey can procure the products locally. |
