Show GREAT HHHiP IS OPENED 1 GRANITE Speeches of Value and Music Given in Initial Programme. The opeuinp session of the Granite ; round up was held yesterday afternoon at 2 0 VI oi' k in the new G ra n i tc au d 1-torium 1-torium and was witnessed by a crowd of about 900 people. Excellent speeches were made by State Superintendent E. G. Gowans, President E. G. Peterson oi the U. A. C, Superintendent (J. H. Skid-more Skid-more of Granite district. Professor D. W. Parratt and Student Body President Dillworth Young. Principal Adam Bennion acted as chairman chair-man and extended a hearty welcome to all those present. Following this the students sang a school song and were joined unanimously by the audience in swelling the strains of "Love's Old Sweet Song. ' ' Superintendent C. H. Skidmore spoke on the subject "A Greater Granite," after which a speech of appreciation was made for the students stu-dents by President Dillworth Young. Horace S. ' Ensign sang liA Song of Peace" and was applauded so strongly that he had to sing two other sele tions. President E. G. Peterson addressed : the assembly on the subject of ' ' The School and the Home." and emphasized the idea that schools should and were becoming more practical in their methods meth-ods every dav. Superintendent Gowans made one of the biggest speeches in the fewest words that has ever been appreciated bv an audience of parents or citizens. He offered to the students an ideal in the character of Lincoln and showed the advantage of living a life of service for our fellowmen. By special request Mr. Ensign sang three more selections and Bert Lietz rendered a violin solo, after which the opening session came to a close by the audience and orchestra joining in the national anthem, "America." Today and Friday other sessions will be held and some of the best speakers of the state will address the people. Departmental Depart-mental meetings will be held and special spe-cial construction will be given in industrial in-dustrial and domestic art. Tomorrow night a play will be given by the students stu-dents and faculty in the new auditorium. |
