Show YDUKG MAH MBESTEO 1 ori ji SFRioys charge Believed by the Sheriff to Be a Professional "White Slaver." Bruce Cole, a -dapper New Yorker, who arrived in Salt Lake a few days afjo and advertised for twenty-five girls to do demo ust rat ion work, hut who is believed by the sheriff s oflk-e to be a professional ' ' white slaver, ' ' was caught in a trap laid last niht by tho sheriff" 's olnce and was lodged in the county jail on a charge- of attempted pandering. Cole was caught last night at a hotel with a young girl who had answered his advertisement, but who was cooperating co-operating with the sheriff's oifiee and through whom the officers were en-1 abled to trap the alleged 1 white slaver" in his efforts to take advantage of the girl. The prisoner was arrested by Deputy Sheriffs E. C. Penrose and Charles Wood, who were assisted iu getting the information on Cole by E. B. Johnstone John-stone and Eddie Shamberger. According to the officers, Cole arrived in the city a few days ago and registered regis-tered at the Kenyon hotel. He inserted au advertisement in the local papers for twentj'-five pirls, offering them employment employ-ment with good salary and all expenses to do demonstration work. Cole is snid to have possessed several natty suits of the latest models, together with a pleasing disposition and a "flash roll," which he 'is said to have used to advantage ad-vantage to ingratiate himself into the good graces of unsuspecting young women. Sheriff John B. Corless was given information in-formation that Cole's intentions were sinister and under his direction Deputies Depu-ties Penrose and Wood prepared a trap for him. A young girl, whose name is withheld, was enlisted in their service and she answered his advertisement. She told the officers that Cole wanted her to dress in a man 's costume and stand in a window and demonstrate a new sort of suspender. L.ater, she said, he wanted to take ber to Honolulu with him and told ber he would get her parents to sign an agreement permitting permit-ting him to take her out of the state. Then, it is alleged, he proposed to her that she get money from her parents, presumably for her costume, and turn it over to him, promising to pay her $25 a week and expenses if she would go with him. He is alleged to have flashed his "roll," and told her that he didn't realh' need the money he wanted her to get from her parents, but she would better get it because ' ' they might need it. ' ' Acting under the directions of the officers the girl consented to meet the man last night and go out with him. Tbe officers followed and they say he took her to a hotel, where he registered regis-tered under a fictitious name with the girb as man and wife and obtained a room. At this juncture the' officers forced their way into the room and placed Cole under arrest. The officers say they have learned that Cole has nothing "whatever to do with the demonstration of the new sus-. pender and he was using the ad!' vertisement merely asa blind, they believe, be-lieve, to ensnare unsuspecting girls and send them east for immoral purposes. |
