LP J APPEALS FOR HINDS JO AIDDISTRESSED Ambassador Gerard Would Relieve Wants of German Orphans and Widows. NEW YORK, Oct. 27 A Thanksgiving Thanksgiv-ing appeal for funds to relieve suffering suffer-ing among the widows and orphans in Germany was issued here today by the American relief committee, backed by the approval of James W. Gerard, United States ambassador to Germany, who expressed the belief that a liberal contribution would do much to make for a more friendly feeling between Germany Ger-many and the United States. "The money will be sent to rne through the United States state department," depart-ment," Mr. Gerard said, "and I will distribute it in Germany through the United States consuls there wherever the need is greatest. I think all persons who are" interested not only in helping the .real necessities of widows and orphans or-phans in Germany, but also in promoting promot-ing more friendly feelings throughout the world, ought to help in this work. "There is real need in Germany for this work, and in distributing the money I shall be careful to let the German public pub-lic know from whence it comes. Americans Ameri-cans have sent much more money to other nations than to Germany, but I hope the Germans will come to realize that the people of America sympathize with the sufferings and needs of the widows and orphans everywhere, and are willing to ameliorate such conditions wherever found. "If I am enabled to go back to Germany Ger-many bringing a substantial sum of money raised by this committee, I do not know of anything better to aid relations between this country and Germany, and when the Germans see that the fund has been raised by a committee so distinctly dis-tinctly American as this one, it cannot but make a most excellent impression upon the people there." The appeal for the fund was issued bv George B. llcClelland, chairman of the American relief committee, after a luncheon given today in honor of Ambassador Am-bassador Gerard by the committee. Among those present were John D. Crim-mins, Crim-mins, treasurer of the committee; Horace Hor-ace E. Andrews, R. Ross Appleton, James A. Burden, Morgan J. O'Brien. J. G.
