SALT LAKE stepped into third place yesterday by virtue of the lioine club 's victory over tbe Oaks and the Beavers' victory over 1 lio Seals. The margin of advantage advan-tage held by Salt Lake is very slight, and unless Salt Lake wiDs both its remaining re-maining games and Portland wiua one ol" its three remaining games from San Kraociseo the Seals will finish in third jdaie Sunday afternoon by something like two poiuts. It is to be hoped, therefore, there-fore, that McX'rcdie can Blip another defeat de-feat ever on YVolvcrton. hi the meantime mean-time Solt Lake must plav carefully and cautiously, lest the Oaks hook another, which would mean the certain blasting of hopes for finishing in the first division. divi-sion. C.'het Hoff added another neat victory vic-tory to his growing string yesterday when he beat tho visitors handily. Again Hoff had control, and be is proving prov-ing that when he can get tho ball over the plate opposing batsmen rarely hit Ym safe. Jn the ninth inning, after "a (ioul.le play had killed off two Oaks, the Ilowarditos, with the help of Rath, staged quite a rally. Three runs were put over before the side was finally retired. re-tired. More Double Plays. Speed Martin, the Oakland youngster who is going to the "White Sox next year, did not prove much of an obstacle ! to the Saints. He was hit often and several times for extra bases. Harry Hannah entered the week's home-run class when he rode the ball out of the lot in the seventh inning. The game was again enlivened by an unusual number of double plays, there being four in the fracas. Three of the double plays were made by the Oaks and one was made by the Saints. Eleven double plays have "been made in two successive games, which is prooably a league record. Take Big Lead. The Saints scored three in the first inning, two of them earned and one a gift. Gislason was walked as a starter, and he scored when Rath poked a two-bagger two-bagger into center. Brief's sizzling single sin-gle to left scored Rath. Bayless singled to center and the throw to third base in an effort to head off Brief went wild. Martin gathered up the ball and made another poor throw to the plate. Brief took advantage of the situation to score. A double Ly Cunningham, a single by Barry and a sacrifice fly by Berger gave tbe Oaks one in- the second. Salt Lake got that one back in their half. Orr walked, went to second on Hannah's sacrifice, to third on Hoff's out and scored on Gislason 's three-bagger to right center. Gislason died at third when Rath was thrown out to retire re-tire the side. Oaks Hit Hard. Two resounding whacks, each for two bases, gave the Oaks a tally in the sixth. The hitters of the doubles were Lane and Kenworthy. In the seventh Hannah's homer gave the locals their fifth tally. In the eighth a superheated swat by Hannah gave them two more. Bayless and Downey having singled, the latter fell victim to a double play when Shinn hit to Murphy. Orr walk'ekd and then Hannah knocked a two-bagger into center, cen-ter, scoring both Bayless and Orr. Oaks Stage Rally. In the Oakland half of the ninth Callan walked. It was Hoff's first pass. Berger hit a popper to Gislason and Callan was doubled at first. Rath 's hipb and wide throw of Vann 'a grounder gave Jack a life. -Martin singled, putting put-ting Vann on third. Martin stole second sec-ond without hindrance and both scored on Middleton 's double. Middleton ftole third and scored on Murphy's hit.
