Show TWO AMERICANS KILLED. A captain and first sergeant of tho United States marine corps have been killed in San Domingo while attempting attempt-ing to arrest a bandit, the latter also being killed in the melee. The account sent to Washington is very ' meager, but says that outside of the shooting in which the two Americans and the bandit ban-dit lost their lives conditions on the island are otherwise quiet. The natives of San Domingo do not take kindly to our interference in their affairs and it is expected that trouble will occur from j time to time and that more American lives will be sacrificed in our attempt to maintain order and administer the financial affairs of the dusky islanders. It. could not be otherwise. In time the Dominicans may get used to it and go to work, .lust now, how ever, t hey are angry and resentful and the sight l of an American marine or bluejacket is 1 i hateful to them. Knowing this, the i officers and men from the United States warships should not needlessly expose t hemselves while making arrests. In j cae of a known bandit it might be j the part of wisdom to shoot him first ami then read the warrant to him. In j any event, no chances should bo taken. |
