It has been mado plain by tho Japanese people that Goorge W. Guthrie, tho now American embassador to Japan, is the most popular popu-lar onvoy that Uncle Sam haB ever had in tho land of tho Mikado. On his arrival ar-rival hero on August 2, an enthusiastic reception was givon him and his popularity popu-larity haB been growing every hour since. Embassador Guthrie was former mayor of Pittsburg, and on his appointment appoint-ment to his now Btation, Viscount Chin-da, Chin-da, the Japanese embassador at "Washington, "Wash-ington, Baid that both the United States and Japan were to bo congratulated upon up-on the appointment by which the important im-portant mission of representing the United States in Japan had been placed in hands so able and distinguished. "He is tho right man in the right place," said Viscount Chinda. That the Mikado holds the same opinion was shown by the exceptional courtesies extended ex-tended to Mr. Guthrie on his arrival here. The imperial coach was sent to meet the American envoy, and he was escorted through tho streets of this city by a regiment of cavalry. |
