Show LONDON OPINION OF THE SILVER OUTLOOK The London firm of Samuel Montagu & Co. has issued the following statement in regard to the sliver situation: A good demand for India has easily absorbed tho moderate amounts offering, of-fering, and the cash price, which was fixed at 273d from the 11th insl. to the 15th, inclusive, has since risen to "Su-16d. the highest price quoted since May 13 last. The market has displayed inherent strength of late, and a contributary cause is the fact lhat, In many quarters, it is considered consid-ered probable that the Tndlan government govern-ment will be forced to buy at a much oarller date than was at one time deemed likely, even if It has not already al-ready anticipated some of its future requirements. Another factor to be considered Is that there still remains open a bear account, built up by Indian speculators specula-tors who are now becoming rather fidgety as to their position, especially as tho monsoon news has been so satisfactory. Prospects, therefore, for the near future cannot be regarded as being otherwise than favorable. Tho Indian currency return cabled on the 17th JnsL showed a further large decrease In tho holding of silver rupees, namely, 120 lacs. The total .holdings of silver, including that In tho standard reserve, is now 2210 lacs, as compared with a total of 1600 lacs at exactly tho same da to last year. At the latter date, however, the Indian In-dian government, as disclosed in the "Government Wliito Paper," has purchased pur-chased silver to the total value of about 4,800,000, or the equivalent of a-bout 1090 lacs of coined rupees, no portion of which figured in the above mentioned 1000 lacs. Comparing this year's shrinkage in tho total of tho silver reserves since the beginning of August with that of 1912, it is found that the amount is Rs 520 lacs, against Rs 355 lacs, or 165 lacs more tills vcar than last year. The stock in Shanghai has fallen slightly In value from 6,215,000 to 6,210",000, while that In Bombay has risen from 380,000 to 415,000. The daily offtake at the latter place has dropped from eighty to seventy bars. Nevadas in San Francisco. James A.
