Not in recent years' has so much damage been done to city streets and private property as was accomplished in a brief half hour Friday afternoon by the terrific storm which swept the eastern and northern bench districts of the city, according io city officials. The damage to tho streets alone in the afflicted district, it is now estimated, will amount to more than $1000. City water mains on many of the lettered streets leading down "from the hills on the north bench were completely com-pletely uucovered. so great was the lorce or the water sweeping down from the mountains where the rain fell in sheets. An inspection of the storm district yesterday by Allen McQuarrie, assistant superintendent of waterworks, revealed whole blocks of exposed water mains.. Deep nits were torn down the middle of V, G and IL streets, and on T, 0 and U streets nowly laid curbing curb-ing and guttering was badly damaged. As far down as South Temple street tho pavements were strewn with boulders, bould-ers, while in many places street car traffic was blocked by reason of the gravel that washed down over the tracks. Ninth nnd Sixth avenue lines were tied up for several hours after the storm. All available crews of the street department de-partment and all tho white wing brigades bri-gades wer sent out on South Temple street and other paved streets into which tho torrents from the side streets poured. Several days and considerable money will be necessary to place the streets in proper condition again. |
