Show IIII REPLY IS IT SATISFACTORY Keen Disappointment iri Japan; Ja-pan; Retaliatory Measures Are Improbable. TOKIO, July 19. Disappointment is felt in Japan in connection with tho American reply to tho two last Japanese Japa-nese notos on tho question of the California Cali-fornia alien land ownership legislation, which does not accept any of the Japanese Japa-nese contentions that the bill violates tho Japanese-American treaty and does not offer any suggestion for tho solution solu-tion of the difficulty. Tho situation here has reached a deadlock. Japan has not yet decided on her nest step but is so desirous of maintaining friendly relations that it is believed sho will not adopt retaliatory measures, such as tho denunciation of the treaty on the ground that it is useless use-less or tho reduction of tho rights of American citizens in Japan. The Japanese public has been led by tho press to tho belief that Washington Washing-ton would afford aorao relief to the situation sit-uation and therefore the government's task has been mado more difficult. The public generally, however, is absorbed in the development of the Chinese situation, sit-uation, in regard to which official advices ad-vices show that the rebellion in southern south-ern China h3s become grave. |
