Gold and diamonds dia-monds have been discovered In Liberia, about thirty miles from tho coast, according ac-cording to a report to tills government by Chargo d'Affalres Georgo W. Ellis of Monrovia. In his report tho charge says: "The discoverer called at this consulate con-sulate general with a quantity of the metal which he had obtained near the settlements, together with photographs showing himself and tho natives at work. He also had a diamond In tho rough, found in the same section. "The discoverer has been engaged for tho last few months In gold washing In Motsorrado county, about fifty miles from Monrovia. The gold has been recovered from the beds of small streams, although the discoverer has located tho metal In the larger streams. In thirteen days, at a cost of about $15, ho secured ?57.60 worth of gold, according to his submitted sub-mitted statement, and with skilled labor and up-to-date apparatus the product could be greatly Increased. There would seem to be just now an opportunity for American capital to enter this phaso of development of Liberia, and this action should not be delayed, as Europeans arc working hard to get all mining rights of tho republic."
