In 1857 he enliBlcd in tho United States army. lie served under General Gen-eral Albert Sydney Johnson in California and Arizona, and when tho Civil war broke out he went by way of Panama with a portion of his regiment to Fortress Monroo. Ho served in the army of the Potomac and was in a number of battles, including Gettysburg, and saw plenty of ac-tivo ac-tivo service. Ho was promoted to bo commissary quartermaster and ad.iu tant. He left tho nrmv in 1803 and came to Salt Lake in 1SGL Uq was ono of tho founders of the Salt Lako Daily Telegraph 111 ISG-1, and, was with tho paper until its removal lo Ogden in 1SG9. Then he became identified iden-tified with tho Z. C. M.
