Show Oregon Situation Is Quite Peculiar Senator and Representative, Under Indictment, Can't Be Consulted as to Appointment. WASHINGTON, Mav 3. Attorney General Gen-eral Moody had a conference today with the President regarding the successor to Charles B. Bellinger, United States District Dis-trict Judge for the district of Oregon, who died last night. Judge Balllnger was to have tried the case of Senator John If Mitchell and others indicted for conspiracy to defraud the I'jiited States In certain land cases. No decision yet has been reached as to who will bo appointed as Judge Bellinger Bel-linger s successor. No Decision Reached. The situation In Oregon Is peculiar. One Senator and one Representative are under indictment. They cannot be consulted, con-sulted, of course, as to the appointment. Hunt May Try Land Cases. In view of the condition which exists, It Is quite probable that Judge William H. Hunt of tho district of Montana will b" designated to try the land fraud ases It may be some time before the permanent perma-nent successor to Judge Bellinger Is named |
