He Has Resigned as Secretary of Bureau of Commerce and Labor Keeps Plans to Himself. CHICAGO, June 3. George. F. Cor-telyou Cor-telyou was chosen chairman of the Republican National committee at a meeting held today just after the adjournment of the convention. In thanking the committee for the honor he told the members that, while he would be glad to have the benefit of their advice and counsel, he intended to be chairman In fact, and would accept no dictation from any one. high or low. He told them that the friends of the late chairman, Mr. Hanna, were his friends, and he' asked for the same measure of confidence and support that had been given to the late chairman. In conclusion he sought the advice of both old and new members. Resierns Cabinet Position. Mr. Cortelyou made no. formal statement state-ment of his plans. He resigned as Secretary Sec-retary of Commerce and Labor as soon as he was elected chairman, the resignation resig-nation to take effect as soon as his successor suc-cessor qualifies, which will be about July 1. Secretary Cortelyou will not give any active time to political matters until he retires frpm the Cabinet. No vice-chairman will be appointed, and the new chairman wll dlvjde his time between the New York and Chicago Chi-cago headquarters. although some members of the committee will no doubt he designated to take charge of the headquarters In this city. Headquarters will not be opened in either city until the lntter part of July. Meanwhile Mr. Cortelyou expects to select the executive execu-tive committee and make his preliminary prelim-inary arrangements for the campaign. Unanimously Selected. A6 soon as the committee was called to order Postmaster-General Payne, in a complimentary speech, nominated Mr. Cortelyou for chairman and the election elec-tion was without a dissenting voice. Messrs. Clayton (Arkansas). Murphy (New Jersey), and Yerkes (Kentucky), were appointed a committee to notify the new chairman and bring him before the committee. After Mr. Cortelyou's remarks Elmer Dove of Ohio was named for secretary by Senator Scott. Cornelius N. Bliss of New York for treasurer by Gov. Murphy, and William F. Stone of Maryland for sergeant-at-arms by Senator McComas. All of these officers were unanimously 're-elected. Will Appoint Executive Committee. A resolution was passed authorizing the chairman to appoint an executive committee of nine, with such other officers of-ficers as are necessary for the management manage-ment of tho campaign. The chairman, secretary, treasurer and sergeant-at-arms ure to be officers of the executive committee. Under this resolution the chairman Is given absolute power in the conduct of the campaign. Invited to St. Louis. Chairman Parker of the Missouri delegation del-egation presented to the committee Invitation In-vitation from David R. Francis, president presi-dent of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Exposi-tion, asking the committee to dine with him tomorrow night. Ono Vacancy. The vacancy In the committee from Louisiana was left to tho chairman to fill. The delegation from that Stato Is deadlocked and could not choose a member. A resolution of thanks was voted to the old committee and the committee adjourned to meet upon the call of the chairman. , Confers "With Leaders. Many suggestions were made to him concerning tho selection of an executive committee and other matters concerning concern-ing the coming campaign. He listened to all. saying that he would give them attention when he relinquished his duties du-ties as a member of the Cabinet. |
