Show EVENTS OF A DAY AT FT. DOUGLAS Ball Gaino Batwson Officers and University Uni-versity Men Won by the Latter. First Sergeant Barnum of company D, Twenty-ninth Infantry, with station sta-tion at Fort Bliss, Tex., has been ap-pqjpted ap-pqjpted Color Sergeant of the. Twenty-ninth Twenty-ninth Infantry, vice James Donnelly, recently retired. Sergeant Barnum, though young In the service, Is an excellent ex-cellent soldier and a better choice could not have been mado. Ho now belongs to the regimental non-commissioned staff, and will join for duty At Fort Douglas within a few days. Mrs. Frank X. Heric and children will arrive at the post In a few days and join Mr. Herlc, who Is chief musician musi-cian of the Twenty-ninth Infantry. They como from Bay City, Mich., and will make their home at the fort. Lieut. U. P. Piatt of the artillery corps is on leave of absence for two months, visiting friends and relatives In the East. During his absence, the post exchange will be In charge of First Lieut. Alpha S. Easton of the Twenty-ninth Infantry. Private Henry A. Bartlett of Company Com-pany F, Twenty-ninth Infantry, performed per-formed a dangerous feat at the post yesterday, which would not have been undertaken by many men of his size. The flag line on the post flagstaff snapped In twain during the lowering of tho colors at retreat Friday night, and the Quartermaster offered any one of the troops ?G who would go to the top of the staff and place a new rope recruit recently from tho rendezvous at Columbia Brooks, O.,, quickly offered his services, which were accepted. The staff Is over 200 feet n height and Is built of steel, gradually tapering off to live Inches In diameter at the top. The task was accomplished in thirty minutes, and was witnessed by a big crowd. Private Bartlett Is by no means a small man, and It Is learned that he holds a record for performing all kinds of feats on this order. ' Lieut. Royden E. Beebe, officer In charge of athletics at the post, will endeavor en-deavor to' organize a baseball team from the ball tossers at Fort Douglas today. The team will be known as the Twenty-ninth Infantry Ball club, and will be composed of players from the infantry companies at the post. The candidates for membership will give an exhibition of their ball playing abilities on the diamond at S:30 this morning. The players will be chosen by a committee com-mittee composed of officers and the best men will be selected. Nothing will be left undine to have one of the best army teams in the country, which will play many games of fast ball during the present season. . About 100P people witnessed. the same of ball played yesterday afternoon on the Fort Douglas grounds between the yniverslty club- team an'd the'' U. S army officers. The game constituted everything but fast ball tossing, the flvo Innings played consuming nearly three hours. Many from t)ie city were In attendance, all of whom were quite enthusiastic ovor t,he result of the game. Twenty-ninth Infantry band discoursed dis-coursed somo lively music to cheer the players on their way and to Inspire the spectators to remain a whllo longer. The University team proved victors over the officers, winning the game to the tune of 12 to 7. Tug Wilson arid Kurg Williams were the battery for tho college boys, w'hlle MaJ. Smith and Lieut. Goodwyn did the work for the officers. Both batteries wero rather weak after the first Inning. The officers offi-cers will practice up a little the coming com-ing week and promise to givo tho University Uni-versity club an awful "drubbing" about July 20, on the same grounds, t .... Private Richard Smith of company L, Twenty-ninth Infantry, Is now In the hospital at Fort Douglas, suffering from the effects of a wound Inflicted by a .32'callbor revolver. Ho went to the canyon near the post yesterday afternoon to try his skill at pistol firing, and In endeavoring to remove re-move the chamber from the piece, tho weapon was accidentally discharged, the, ball tearing off the end of the Index finger of his right hand. Although the wound is a painful one, Smith reached the post without assistance and was Immediately taken to the hospital. Smith is one of the recruits recently arrived ar-rived frqm Columbus Barracks, Ohio. |
