Show DRY FARMING PLEASES ' TOOELE COUNTY FARMERS Special to The Tribune. G RANTS VILLE. Tooele County. July 9. More than 250 persons, from seven different towns of Tooele, county, had an opportunity yesterday of Inspecting In-specting the work done on tho Tooele county arid farm, conducted under the direction of the Utah Experiment station. sta-tion. Representative farmers, with their families, came from every part of Tooele county. The wheat and oats are Just beginning begin-ning to ripen nnd give Evidence of giving giv-ing an extra large yield for do farming. farm-ing. The sugar beets, corn, speltz, millet, velvet beans, Kaffir corn and dwarf Essex rape are all looking thrifty and vigorous and give every promise of a successful yield. Especially Especial-ly promising was a plat of sand vetch which now stands about eighteen Inches high. Before harvesting samples will be taken ta-ken from each of the plats for exhibit at the State fair this fall. Leon Imlay, the local foreman In charge, had constructed a bower forty feet square and had on hand, also, a number of gallons of Iced lemonade for refreshments. After lunch Representative Spry called those assembled to order nnd Prof. Merrill explained the work of the farm, giving reasons for the success or failure of tho various plats. The principles prin-ciples upon which successful dry farming farm-ing Is based were explained and the farmers encouraged to adopt these methods and utilize the waste deserts of Tooele county. Among the leading citizens present wero County Commissioners Rydalch and PowelL Representative Spry, Bishop Wrathall. County Surveyor Stookey, Bishop Stookey, John Tate, E. D. Wooley, A. Hale and others. This Is the first time anything of the kind has ever been held in this county, and Its success will encourage similar excursions In future years. By seeing tho actual work accomplished In ten months' time, many of tho moat progressive pro-gressive farmers here were encouraged to Invest In this enterprise, and if tho same results can bo secured In future years the agricultural output of this county will be Increased many fold. |
