Show TRAGKLAYIN6 ON SAN PEDRO ROAD Day by Day tho Distance Between tho Two Ends of tho Lino Lessens. i DAY by day the distance between tho end3 of the track of the San Pedro road, now building, Is being be-ing lessened. To those who still believe, or affect to believe, that it will be a long time before the line will bo finished, a great disappointment is In store, since at the rate work 13 now going it will be possible to run a train through even before tho time set byt tho management. When work .was well under way graders were pushing northeast from Daggett, northeast and southwest from a point near the Manvel road and at different points below Cnllcnte. "With all those camps the grade at an early day began to loom up on the desert In the most gratifying manner. But owing to the great distance of these points from any news center, the magnitude mag-nitude of the work has been overlooked, to a large extent, and the general public pub-lic has no idea of the steam shovels, the army of men, hundreds of animals, tons of hay and feed, with all the other paraphernalia of a big railroad contract, con-tract, which are features of the work in California and Nevada. ' On June 1 tho distance between the end of the line below Moapa and the California track was only 1-1 G miles, and since then It has been somewhat lessened, so that today It Is only about 140 miles between the two points. When It Is considered that part of this is graded, it Is not a long piece of country that remains to be tracked with the steel connecting Salt Lake with Los Angeles and the broad Pacific Pa-cific Just now the tracklayers on the California Cali-fornia end are right up with the graders grad-ers near Kcssler summit, but when that work is finished by tho graders all will be clear for the steel gang, as the grade Is ready from Kcssler summit to the Nevada-California line. Therefore, in a very short time, the track will reach to that line from tho California end and to Los Vegas from this end. |
