Show PITCHER WIGGS IS SUSPENDED "Big Jim" Ordered to the Bench. Salary Stopped Until Wiggs Gets Himsolf Into Shape. His Performance in the Game Last Sunday Brought on the Trouble. fTB"IIE management of this club feels 1 that you arc not putting forth your best efforts In Its behalf. You have hitherto claimed it was lack of condition on your part. Your record rec-ord In the last game , at Butte, eleven bases on balls, one wild pitch, two batters hit and cloven stolen bases docs not Indicate Indi-cate any Improvement, and It has been decided to allow you to get Into condition at your own expense, this letter being notice no-tice to' you that on and after this date, June S, you are suspended without pay, until such time as In the Judgment of the management you are In proper condition and prepared to earn your salary." The foregoing Is a copy of the letter directed yesterday afternoon to Pitcher Wlggs of the Salt Lake baseball club by Manager Glmlln. Tho note Is self-explanatory and means that Wlggs will remain re-main on the bench until the Elder management man-agement la satlsllcd that he can and will play ball. .. Last season "Jamesy" Wlggs was tho most popular slab artist in the Pnclflc National Na-tional league and was Idolized by tho Salt Lake fans. It was generally conceded that "Big Jim" was the bcBt pitcher in the league and his presence on the rubber was ample assurance that the Elders would emerge victorious. Last fall in a doublo-header, Wlggs pitched twenty-two Innings In one afternoon. after-noon. Ho won both games and struck out tho last nine men who faced him. This is a record that would do credit to a pitcher In any company. This season Wlggs has not been In his usual form. It was generally believed that he had not conditioned himself and the fans supposed that with a few weeks work ho would bo the sumo old twiner who last year caused despair and consternation con-sternation to fill the hearts of the batters who faced him. T Last Sunday at Butte Wlggs made the record referred to In the letter quoted. It was his performance In thlB game that caused the manager of tho Salt Lake team to take action In tho matter. |
