Show The fuBs made over the Bey of Tunis hi his visit to Paris, is characteristic of French courtesies that are meant to 'serve a public and political purpose. The Bey Is In fact compelled to make tht visit; ho Is received with all Ihe formalities and ceremonies accorded to a great ruler of an Independent utate. While in Paris he Is coerced Into signing sign-ing away his independence and accepting accept-ing a French protectorate. Some years ago, Italy was much disturbed by French aggression upont Tunis, but was quieted, and tho process of French preponderance pre-ponderance went forward; until finally the Bey of Tunis came completely under un-der the Influence of France. This visit of tho BRy to Paris Is no doubt the final stepk the practical absorption of .Tunis; and then. France will be free to turn her attention westward, for the gradual absorption of Morocco, piecemeal, piece-meal, as foreshadowed in the recent treaty between France and Great Britain. |
