Show A HOST OF DESERTIONS. Tho desertions of the parly which repudiates principle and scores the man who calls for consistency may be expected ex-pected to be numerous and influential this year. The quitting of the decayed old Democratic hulk by the Chicago Chronicle is the first of what is undoubtedly un-doubtedly to be a long procession. No reason Is given in the telegram which announces this change, why It is made, but it Is not hard to Imagine the true cause. When a committee on platform will spend Its whole time In an effort not tor express any convictions, or belief, or course of action, but, only in an effort to string together a mass of words that express neither definite thought nor fixed purpose, but only on the test whether the language used will win or lose votes, It is impossible for any voter of fixed ideas or definite opinions to have cither faith In a platform plat-form so framed, or confidence iif a party that Is content to stand upon It. When, further, that party denounces trusts and nominates a special friend of the trusts for President, its hypocrisy hypo-crisy is apparent. The procession out of the Democratic party this year may be expected to be longer and stronger than the like procession pro-cession of 1896. |
