Show "GOLDEN RULE" Jt)NES DEAD Mnyor of Toledo Passes Awny From Attack of Pheumqnia, TOLEDO, O., July 12. Samuel M. Jones, widely known as GtvlSsn Rule Jones, Mayor of .this city, died this evening at 5:07 o'clock, from an attack of pneumonia. He had "en unconscious uncon-scious foV thirty-six hours and tho end came peacefully. The death of Mayor Jones lias caused Hie greatest sorrow all over the city. Although many did not believe in his Ideas on sociological problems, everybody every-body loved and respected him. His one great stronghold with the people of Toledo was his honesty. The Mayor was taken 111 two weeks ago last Saturday, Sat-urday, and for the last forty-eight, hours previous to his death, was in a comatose condition. He did not regain consciousness during that time. All the members of his family were at his bedside bed-side at the time of his death. He left a widow and three sons, Percy, Paul and Mason Jones. He will be succeoded as Mayor by Robert Finch, president of the City Council. The remains of Mayor Jones will lie in state at Memoriul hall on Thursday and Friday until noon, and -the funeral services will be held at the residence on the veranda and the addresses will be made from the veranda. The lawns will be open to all. The pall-bearers will be selected from his employees. Samuel M. Jones was born In Wales in 1S4G. He came to the United States with his parents when 3 years old. Poverty compelled him to work when a child. In ISCi he went to Tltusvllle. Pa., oil fields to labor; later he became a producer In Pennsylvania. Ohio and West AMrginlu. He Invented an improved im-proved oil well appliance. He established estab-lished a manufactory and Introduced various reforms in labor conditions. Ho was three times elected Mayor of Toledo. To-ledo. He was noted for advocacy of municipal ownership, direct legislation of the eight-hour day and of the doctrine doc-trine that the people should nominate their own candidates fcr ull offices by free petition without aid of caucuses, primaries, delegates or parties. |
