| Show L ISOLATED BLOCK DAM PAVEMENT ON EAST SIDE I J k v f r rI rA t A I ext a 9 4 f ff t f f fr fa c I I I r a a af ay y f wr t i iY in Y n v Raa 3 mom t i it t A C Cd j j d I View of Macadam Pavement Recently Completed on Twelfth East Street Between Second P J Morans Concrete Mixing Plant In Operation on Fourth South Street Between Main and and Third South Streets State Streets One ot of Salt Lakes municipal curiosities curiosities ties Is the block of macadam pavement laId on Twelfth East street between Second and Third South streets This one Isolated block Is the only pavement in the vicInity and connects at either en end with unpaved streets Second South being paved only to Tenth East and no paving work having been done yet on Third South The property owners In this block ore are the cause of the Improve Improvement mont ment for which they have paid P J 1 Moran MaNn is the contractor Before the Improvement was made this section of the street was most unsightly the i west sIde being much higher than the north A steep grade also added to the Inconvenience Fine homes line the n street and it was decided by their owners that a grade grado for all time should be established and the block paved with macadam Tho council was appealed to and although there was consIderable ble astonishment at the decision of th the prope property ty owners they were gIven what they wished As a result this block will soon be one of the beauty spots of oC Salt Lake The people have just com completed completed laying sidewalks on either side the terraces are being Improved flowers and trees planted and the bou boulevard levard seeded Already property own owners owners ers on the other sections of the street are becoming envious of this block full of enterprising citizens and no doubt will soon petition that the pavement be connected with Brigham street at least u The other view shown Is of Fourth South street Here P J Moran Is lay laying laying ing asphalt from Second East to West Temple street a distance of oC three blocks at a cost ot of The work will be completed in about two weeks Already the block between Main and West Temple streets has been finished and almost the entire block between State and Main streets One side of oC the block between State and Second East streets remains to be finished d although the concrete foundation has been laid Along the entire length of the pave pavement pavement ment on these streets the street rail rall railway wa way company has laid Its new eighty p pound und steel rails which will wUl last as long If not longer than the pavement which i is guaranteed for ten years ears These rails ralls are on a ballasted road roadbed roadbed bed and only creosoted ties are used The concrete mixing plant of Mo Moran Io ran shown In the picture Is located in inthe inthe the block between State Stat and Main streets In the rear of the theold theold old Kimball homestead and on th the Newhouse property Here all the con concrete concrete crete for the f foundation of the asphalt is made For Fourth South street cubic yards ards were needed which means about 1500 wagon loads The Fourth South street pavement is no doubt the finest that has ever been laid in the west and will equal any ever eyer laid in the country This Is the opinion of experts who have examined it and who have warmly complimented Moran One of the features of the pavement Is that In the warm weather it is possible possible ble to made a heel mark on It and to punch an umbrella point an Ich or so 50 into It It is becoming generally r recognized cog I nIzo d thai tha asphalt pavement to last must be laid In this manner so that when the winter comes It will not crack on contracting The marks made by horses hoofs and otherwise soon disappear disappear pear as the pavement Is elastic and is isable isable able to cover up UJ these Indentations The asphalt Is laid two wo inches thick with a binder composed of tarred rock one and inches thick All this Is supported by a concrete foundation six inches through The plans for all this work were made by L C Kelsey city engineer |
