| Show EOO iOJIIDtlL SdLE TME TEn selectmen of Salt Lake J county met on Monday and took care of themselves them-selves They are very charitable men on the theory that charity begins at home They are public spirited on the rule of the famed three tailors of Tooley street who commenced their manifesto with We the public Our selectmen paid themselves liberally as will be seen from the detailed statements state-ments in another part or this paper for the month of January The three selectmen are very valuable valu-able officers judging from the i amounts which they pay themselves out of the county treasury They cost the dear people 475 for the first month in the year the first of their valuable services At the same rate for the whole year they would cost the county 55748 A large portion of this sum is charged charg-ed for mileage The statute allows twenty cents per mile in going only from their residence to the cbunty seat at each session of the court attended by them But it will be sean that they have been careful to demand their mileage on every movement they have made in any direction Also that these charges appear to be somewhat excessive exces-sive Mr Roberts mileage for a month foots up the snug little sum of 7680 Leaving passes out of the question but considering the real cost of transportation transpor-tation the gentleman manages to make a nice little slice of profit out or his mileage fees Mr Chrlstophensons mileage Is more moderate because he does not live so far from the county building But both he and Mr Geddea charge up every mile that they travel mak ing a two mile trip each time to the county jail which is but six blocks from the oounty building These art small matters singly but foot Uj p a great deal In a year Mi Geddes in his statement charges for cessions We are not aware of any cessions he has made to the county court but probably that is an error in orthography as he writes mileage without an e and although he 1 was supposed to be a leader in uuch matters it is evident that his spelling education has been somewhat neglected neg-lected However they are minor matters The figures are of more eWe e-We refer to them that our Republican Republi-can friends may see what economists they have placed in office and that the taxpayers may take account of what I the county court is likely to cost them i during the term of the present incura 4 bents if they continue to be as mindful I mind-ful of themselves as they have been I for the first month of their official time This is a reformatory and Investigating I In-vestigating county court you know I and consistency is a jewel wherever It Is to be found |
