| Show THE FIRST GUN FIRED The first gun fired in the convention field had a partisan boom Charles Crane of Kanosh assumed to call the convention to order and conduct the preliminary proce dings He had no other authority or claim to consideration considera-tion or qualification for tailing the honr unto himself but his position as chairman of Territorial Republican Committee There were older abler more experienced and more suitable men for the place but he took it as if it were a matter of course Hon David Evans of Weber endeavored en-deavored to Induce the convention to act with courtesy to age and as there Is nothing In the enabling act or the rules regulating similar bodies to direct di-rect in this matter he proposed that the custom adopted in many such assemblies i as-semblies should prevail in this That is to give the oldest delegate having i credentials the honor of calling the convention to order i But Me Crane brusquely announoed I that lie had been requested by several gentlemen to take that position and proceeded to call upon Hon George Q I Cannon to invoke the divine blessing II 3Mr Evans however insisted on his motion mo-tion but it was voted down and the I Republican chairman and machine triumphed tri-umphed oved old age courtesy and i consistency I We hops this will not prove a sign I of what may be expected throughout I the session Partisanship if carried out II in this way will wreck the convention conven-tion To save trouble however if that sort of thing is to go on there should I be an early motion to take up Cranes I two constitutions which it Is announced 1 an-nounced he has prepared As both cannot can-not be accepted one could be adopted and the delegates could go home If Crane is to run the convention the sooner It runs out the better Read his constitution three times and let it i i 1 go to the people That would be this end of the whole matter It is said there are a number of Republicans who do hot want statehood at all at present Well the course we suggest would settle the question according to their wishes A Crane constitution would choke off the whole business The Herald does not believe that this sort of thing will go on The constitutional consti-tutional convention is not a Republican Republi-can assembly It is a body representing represent-ing and acting for the entire people of Utah of all parties persuasions and proclivities We expect to see that fact recognized now that the ICanosn aspirant for the Governorship has flapped flap-ped his wing and retired Let us have a nonpartisan convention recognizing the rights of all the members and all the people |
