Senate and the galleries wore literally packed the crowds filling I the Senate pushing Into the aisles and overflowing In long lines down the corri I dors and stairways Many members of the diplomatic ic corps I occupied the gallery reserved for them By 10 oclock the last formalities on the I two remaining appropriation bills naval and deficiency were concluded and the i measures started to the executive mansion man-sion There was no disposition to take I up new business and two efforts to consider I con-sider questions affecting the Bearing sea i were cut off by objections A feature of the last moments of the I session was the tumultuous laughter which greeted the announcement of Mr Yoorhees of the committee to wait on the president that the latter tendered his I congratulations to Congress on the close ot their labors VicePresident Stevenson closed the session with a few weHchojsen words and as he stated the work of the Fiftythird Congress passed into history A Dismal Majority Only three senators Manderson Pettigrew and Mitchell Wisconsin were at their desks when the vicepresi dent rapped for order at 9 oclock this morning after n recess of less than five hours Observing the smallness of the attendance Mr Manflerson commented com-mented on the fact That the other side seemed to be in a dismal minority minor-ity and a recess was taken for 15 minutes There was perhaps at this time a hundred people In tee nailer lee the crowd of a closing session not yet having taken possession of the capitol The octogenarian Merrill and the sllverlialred Sherman came In shortly after Those who had remained in > the chamber until nearly daylight showed in their faces that the strain was telling on them Mr Cockrell a chairman of the Appropriation Ap-propriation Committee a Be-ring sea regulations which he said were essential to the preservation of the fur seals Mr Morgan Democrat of Alabama Ala-bama chairman of the committee on foreign relations obiertefl This ended the chances of the bill Another phase of the same subject came up when Mr Morgan asked the adoption of a pending agreement directing di-recting the foreign relations committee tee to Inquire into the claims of certain cer-tain sealers for the seizure of vessels ves-sels selsThis time it was Mr Grays turn to object I Mr Morgan thereupoiumade a pointed point-ed statement of the injustice and extravagance ex-travagance of the British demands his service at the Paris court of awards giving the statement special significance signifi-cance He said the president und secretary sec-retary of state had urged the payment of 425000 although the clalmtwas unjustifiable un-justifiable Mr Gray pressed the objection He Said Mr Morgan evidently feared chat the pending legislation on the subj < ct Call again endeavored to secure his Florida lottery Investigation but Mr Gorman cutit off Mr Hanson the new minister to Mexico presented his resignation from the Printing Committee which Is to set during the recess I was now 1130 a m with only half an hour of life remaining for this congress There was great confusion on the floor a Senators sought recognition recog-nition Mr Call was again to the front with his lottery investigation declaring vehemently ve-hemently that Mr Gorman was seek hementy see ing r suppress an inquiry desired by the religious element of the community He demanded a yea and nay vote on taking up the resolution T the surprise sur-prise of every one Including Mr Call the resolution was taken upOS to 18 I For a moment it was believed the resolution I reso-lution wa adopted and the presiding officer so announced The final rote I was interrupted by other pressing busl ness and Mr Call did not press the measure further I At 1140 a joint resolution was passed as to compensation to employees A messenger dashed away with it in a race t get to the White house and secure the Presidents signature within twenty minutes The thanks of the Senate were expressed ex-pressed in a resolution offered by Mr Manderson for the courtesy and Impartiality Im-partiality with which Mr Harris had served as president pro tern of the Senate Mr Harris then took the chair and returned his thanks for the flattering resolution At twelve minutes to Ifc oclock the last enrolled bU reported to the Senate was signed by the vicepresident but It seemed impossible to get the < ej ecu tlve signature in time Mr Call vehemently Insisted on a final vote on hip Florida resolution Mr Aldrich declared that n specIal commltte if appointed would be for apolitical a-political purpose alone He moved an amendment that the committee on ju diciary make the investigation Mr Call excitedly denounce the statement of Mr Aldrlch concerning the political puropses of the enquiry At this mo make the official announcement that the Senate stands adjourned without day As the last words were spoken by the vicepresident being timed to conclude con-clude at 12 he brought his gavel down sharply and declared the session at an end There was no demonstration and no applause Senators began bidding bid-ding their adieus The appearance of the chamber and the weary looks of wornout senators was
